a familiar voice

A few days ago I popped a newly bought Third Day cd into my car. They are one of my favorite bands.

As soon as the singer started singing the first song, I was instantly transported back in time. I was 22 again, driving around Houston in a boat of a rental car that I always got, filled with a sense of awe and adventure, traveling on assignment as a consultant to Reliant Energy, walking past their somber security guards every day to an intimidating bank of elevators that would whisk me up to the 27th floor.  Houston was a fun adventure as a fresh-faced college graduate, but it was also a time of great lonliness and trial as a newly graduated student, trying to navigate the waters of adulthood in a new city, and also faith as an adult. I had a Third Day cd that I played constantly for a few months of my time out in Houston, and it served as a great comfort to me.

That sense of comfort came back to me this week, with this new Third Day cd. It didn't matter that I was unfamiliar with most of the songs on this cd. What mattered was that it was such a familiar voice to me, and just hearing it brought about a sense of peace and security. It reminds me of the way little children will creep out of bed and fall asleep on the couch next to their parents. They don't need their parents to say anything particular to them -- just the sound of their voice represents their nearness and gives them a sense of security. For those that have a relationship with Jesus, it's the same way that God's voice speaks to us out of stillness and gives us peace. We all need a little dose of security in our lives.

Your Napa Itinerary

A few years ago I received a really good list of wineries to visit in Napa. We didn't make it to all the places on the list, but it's a fantastic list. Use it, and you're guaranteed a fun day. Sharing is caring, so here it is!

Heres a list, in the order you should visit.

1. domaine chandon. good for sparkling wine (california champagne). and
try the smoked salmon appetizer!
http://www.chandon.com/default.html

2. robert mondavi. good for the tours.

3. cakebread. has good chardonnay.

4. st. supery. i also like their chardonnay.

5. v. sattui. has a deli, and a picnic area
http://www.vsattui.com/

6. beringer. has excellent dessert wines. also a good tour.

Good place for lunch: Tra Vigne. It's somewhere in between V. Sattui and
Beringer.

Also worth checking out: Dean & Deluca.

btw, Beringer is a really far drive from all the other places, but it's
worth it. Try to head over there from V. Sattui no later than 3pm.

Please note that this is a pretty ambitious schedule. If you get there
after 10am, then skip St Supery.

Gauteng, South Africa

hi friends. when did all websites start getting fancy, whizzy, and too slick?

for those of you who didn't know, i recently came back from a two week adventure to Johannesburg, South Africa. Gauteng is the name of the larger province that Johannesburg is in. the close to 30 hour travel time (each way) was *well* worth it. as was the look on people's faces in the San Jose airport's baggage area when my cellophane-encased suitcase was ejected from the carasol :)

what was i doing? there was a team blog! read all about it here.

spur of the moment thoughts: growing up.

hello friends. anybody still expecting to see posts from me? here's a purely entertaining, fluffy post just to see who's still out there :) this weekend i had a very important confirmation. i have changed. i've grown up. it is definitely for the better and it still makes me smile!

when i was younger, the only boys i was interested in were white. very white, blue eyes, blond hair, etc. my aunts in taiwan would repeatedly ask me, "are you going to end up marrying a white guy?" with a sad look in their faces. then i grew up a little, and my horizons expanded. they expanded to include the Surfer Boy and the Pretty Boy.  one of my friends observed to me, "every description of these guys in your life includes the phrase: 'he wears a necklace'!" great. so shallow. and then i grew up a little more, and the Cool, Charismatic Guy entered the scene. he wore cool clothes, he was social, had those cool shoes, and just had that "image." still no good.

and finally, i got close to where i am today. no more Pretty Boys. no more Cool Guys. friends who are expecting me to marry some tall, handsome, successful businessman, sorry to disappoint you. if you want to introduce me to a man who exudes any of these superficial qualities, you'd better make sure he has an extra, extra big dose of personality, godliness, thirst for adventure and a heart for the nations!
